Marble Hill Swim Raises €2,800 For Bloodbike North West - 23rd February 2015

This years New Year’s Day Swim at Marble Hill organised by the Doe Amateur Swimming Club raised €2800 for Bloodbikes North West. The presentation took place in Lizzie’s Diner in Dunfanaghy on Monday night last.

Speaking at the Presentation John Richards the Chairman of the Doe Amateur Swimming Club thanked everyone who helped to make the club’s 39th Annual Swim such a success. He said that over the years the club has raised over €100,000 for charity and is still going strong and long may it continue.

He thanked the local residents of Portnablagh and Marble Hill for their continued co-operation and for putting up with the disruption on the day. He thanked The Irish Coast Guard, An Garda Siochana, Anthony Gallagher, Noel Brennan, and Willie Sheridan, Lizzies Diner Dunfanaghy for making the soup on the day and for hosting the presentation and providing food on the night, Boyce’s Centra for the Cup, the Traffic Marshalls, the money collectors and money counters, all the swimmers who took part, the Doe Swimming Club Committee, Dr Paul Stewart, all who provided sponsorship, the committee of Blood Bikes North West, Mary and Peggy for making the soup over the years and he also spoke about how lucky the club has been with weather windows over the past few years especially this year.

Returning thanks Bernard McDyre Chairman of BloodBikes Northwest thanked the club for having them as their nominated charity this year and he spoke about the work that they do a voluntarily out of hours service for the HSE by transporting Blood. Plasma, etc between hospitals. This is their second year in operation and they do between 10 and 12 callouts per months.

Each member works about 5 nights per month and they like to give up their time to help this cause. There were five bikers at the Presentation. In the past two years they have carried out 145 callouts and they reckon that in this time they have saved the HSE €45,000 which can be used in other sectors.

The money raised by the New Years Swim will go towards bringing in a new Bloodbike.
